Christmas Cracker!

Heygarth 0 - AFC Waverton 6

Christmas came early at Eastham Woods when the girls left with all three points after putting in a thoroughly convincing display against Heygarth. The drizzle started as the game kicked off and continued all through the game making the pitch heavy.

Where has that Sat Nav taken us - where's the pitch?

The home side won the toss and elected to play up the slope in the first half giving them an advantage in the second period. Waverton needed to capitalise on this and it took about 10 minutes for the Waverton goal to come. Keira picked up the ball on the wide left and jinked past a yellow shirted defender brilliantly, ran into the box and squeezed a shot between the 'keeper and the post.

The goal gave the visitors confidence and it was pretty much one way traffic for the rest of the half although captain Lucie was called on to make a brilliant save from a Heygarth breakaway when a long ball bounced over Ellie at the back. A little later it was a bit tense in Lucie's goal mouth when a firm touch on the loose ball would have made it 1-1, but it was eventually cleared. Keira took 8 corners an indication of the pressure on the home goal, but the Heygarth 'keeper Emma was up to dealing with them all. Emma played in goal for Waverton in the friendly in May and was having a great game again.

At half time Mike told the girls to have a pop at goal when they got forward and it took only a few minutes for Elia to do just that, latching on to a ball and cracking a shot into the left hand side of the goal. Emma increased the lead later on and then Lily ran down the right and like Keira in the first half squeezed a shot in from a narrow angle to make it 4-0. Emma got on the scoresheet again and then with just a minute left Ellie Riste ran down the right and her deflected shot beat the keeper.

This was a great performance to cap an excellent 2008 for the team. Heygarth are a good team, but today Waverton were miles better. Frank , the Heygarth secretary said it was very well deserved. We wish Heygarth good luck for the rest of the season.

Heygarth voted Emma Harrison as player of the match, so well done Emma.

Have a good Christmas and we'll see everyone back for the first weekend in January.

Heygarth game confirmed this Saturday

The final game of 2008 takes place away at Heygarth this Saturday. All players are asked to meet at the field next to the Port Sunlight Tennis Club at 9:00am ready for a 9:30 kick off. Don't be deceived by the name though, the club is in Eastham, not Port Sunlight. Also it is not the same venue as when we played Heygarth in the Summer.

The postcode of the tennis club is CH62 3PU and the address is Green Lane, Bromborough Wirral.

From Waverton take the M53 past Ellesmere Port to the A41 junction (Junction 5). Drop down off the motorway to the roundabout and take the third exit. Take the A41 northwards past the Travel Lodge towards Birkenhead. Go through Eastham and keep on A41 passing Snow and Rock on the left. Go past Shell garage and church on left and at next lights turn right into an industrial estate (Old Hall Road). At a roundabout turn right and then soon after turn off down a little road on the right which will take you to Port Sunlight Tennis Club. Park in the club car park and go through a gate. We are on the field to the left of the big field, with the mini soccer pitches at the back behind the hedge.

If you know where Eastham Woods is, the field is just at the back of it, but we get to it by the Tennis club not by the Woods.

All players are available except Caitlin. Lucie will play in goal and that will give us all confidence to be able to go and get three points to end 2008 on a high. Heygarth play in yellow so we'll be wearing bibs.

If anybody needs a lift please contact Mike on 07901552261.

See you there!

Training tonight, Game Saturday

The final indoor training session of 2008 will take place tonight from 6 to 7 at the Sports Centre.

On Saturday we are away at Heygarth in Eastham. Further details to follow once we have confirmation from the home side.

If the game is off, we'll have a training session anyway as we have not played outside for a number of weeks.

We'll update this website, so keep checking.

BBC Sports Personality of the Year Chris Hoy didn't get any votes in our poll. Instead Heather Scheuber won by a mile (see voting results on the right). Heather's Birmingham City beat Liverpool Ladies last Sunday 3-2 and Heather scored. She always like scoring against Liverpool.

'There's even some girls here'

Today's Chester City trip was a big success for the club with over 160 players taking part in the training sessions at Wood Farm. A few girls from the u12s, u14s and u16s were there and some younger ones too.

'There's even some girls here' said one Waverton boy to his mate.

There was a female linesman for the Notts County game too.

Thanks to Graham Frost and to Danny Jones and his team at Chester City FC.

URGENT - Wirral Ladies game postponed - URGENT

The pitches at Waverton have standing water on them this evening so we have sadly had to call Saturday's game against Wirral Ladies off.

The final training session of 2008 will take place on Wednesday and then the final game will take place next Saurday (December 20) when we travel to Heygarth at Eastham.

We are starting to collect the £10 fee for the hire of the Christleton hall for training Jan to March.

Heather's Birmingham City are playing Liverpool Ladies on Sunday (14th). Mike can't go and Heather will be travelling with the team, but if any parents want to go along and cheer Heather on, contact Mike or Heather for directions. It is at Skelmersdale United's ground and kicks off at 2pm. There is a social club there which serves refreshments.

Monday 8 December 2008

Training Wed. Game Sat.

Training this Wednesday as usual. Just before 6 to just before 7. We will be collecting £10 from each player to cover the costs of hire until March.

We have a home game on Saturday against Wirral Ladies. Kick off at 9:30 so all players to meet at 9:00.

The game will take place on the school pitch, not on the main field. Keep an eye on the weather and on the website.

The club now has over 150 players going to the Chester City trip along with 80 adults. This should double the attendance at the Deva. It represents half the players registered for Waverton and is an amazing turn out. The u14s and u16s girls have brought forward their games to enable them to get to the Chester training ground for 11:45.

Chester City Trip - Absolute Final Chance

This is the absolute final chance for girls to join the Club trip next Saturday to Chester City FC after our home game against Wirral Ladies.

We have to give money to the Club Chairman by Sunday evening. Please let Mike know straight away if any other girls are interested - 07901552261

The information is as follows:

Dear Player/Parent/Guardian

We have organised a Club Christmas visit to watch Chester City play Notts County at the Deva Stadium on Saturday 13th December 2008. The visit will include training sessions in the morning which will be run by Chester City’s centre of excellence coaches at the new Wood Farm training facility, followed by a ground tour and visit behind the scenes at the club to meet the players and get autographs. Fruit bags and juice drinks will be supplied by McDonald’s, Sealand Road, Chester, and each player will also receive a community brochure.

The visit is open to players of all ages and it is envisaged that we would meet at the training ground for 11.45pm on the 13th December.

Different topics will be taught at each session testing and improving skills in:
· Passing
· Dribbling
· Shooting
· Control and 1st touch, plus much more…. and the players will then get feedback from the coaches about the session.

The players will then make their way to the football stadium for 13:35pm for a ground tour and visit behind the scenes at the club to meet the players and get autographs, eat their lunch and then to watch Chester City play Notts County and the match will finish at 16:45pm where the players will exit the ground with parents/guardian and make their way home from the fixture.

Wood farm training facility address – Deeside Lane, Sealand Road, Chester, CH1 6BP
Chester City FC Deva stadium – Bumpers Lane, Sealand Road, Chester CH1 4LT
All Players attending £12 - this includes Coaching session, McDonalds refreshments, Match day ticket, ground tour and community brochure.

Costs:

All Players attending £12 - this includes Coaching session, McDonalds refreshments, Match day ticket, ground tour and community brochure.

Adult Tickets £10 this includes just match day ticket. Child ticket £5 (excludes training session and tour)

Ridgewood Rangers game off

We have had to call off tomorrows game against Ridgewood Rangers because the Queens Field is waterlogged. All the games on Wirral Borough Council pitches are off too.

We had hoped to have a training session instead from 9:30-10:30 at King George Field at Christleton (the field near the play area behind the pond or Pit as it known locally) but have been down to the field this afternoon (thanks Simon) and it is also far too wet. So a free Saturday to do some Christmas shopping!

Elia and Lucie are unwell so we hope to see them back on Wednesday for training at 6pm. We will also have a training session on Wednesday 17 December.

We will need to collect £10 per player to cover the cost of hiring the hall during the winter. This will cover October to March and is good value. Rather than collecting a weekly fee, it is much easier for us to collect a tenner off you to cover the whole period.

Wednesday 3 December 2008

Pitch inspection for Saturday's game

On Saturday we have a game against Ridgewood Rangers. It will be a 9:30 kick off at Waverton and all players are asked to meet at 9:00 am. However, the weather forecast is not good for the rest of the week and so there will be a pitch inspection on Friday morning.

We will put information on this website as soon as we have it, so keep checking.
The Waverton bug is affecting the team - Lucie, Meg and Heather are all suffering.
Heather and Mike won the training game tonight. 2v5 and still the coaches won!

Chester City Trip - Saturday December 13

This is the last call for this trip. The u16 girls are all going as are many of the other age groups. Training sessions with Chester City FC coaches will take place from 11:45 followed by a tour of the Deva Stadium and then watch Chester v Notts County. Please contact Mike asap on 07901552261 if you are interested. Parents and brothers/sisters welcome.

Ridgewood Rangers v Wirral Rangers - League awards home win

Wirral Hawks won the top of the table clash with our opponents from last week Wallasey Wanderers whilst Greenleas Celtic keep up the pressure on the top two with a 7-0 win at Heygarth United. At the other end of the table Greenleas remain bottom having not played today of course but the teams around us in the bottom half all lost although Ridgewood Rangers were awarded the points after Wirral Rangers failed to fulfil the fixture. Our next three games are against teams around us so we have a chance to move well up the League before the Christmas break.

Greenleas game postponed

Apologies for the late calls about the postponement of the Greenleas game, but we only got the news at 9pm on Friday night. Greenleas were unable to field a side and their Secretary had mistakenly thought they were playing Heygarth and so had informed Heygarth earlier in the day that it was off. Heygarth, who were due to play the Greenleas Celtic side, then got a call at 9pm to say their game was back on!

The postponement was not all bad news as we were short of players anyway. Lily and Lucie were unavailable and Emma rang in sick in the morning. Then in the evening, Meg who had been suffering all week called in sick too, leaving us with only 5 players. The league rules say that we have to play the game even if we have 5 players available otherwise we lose the points and the club gets fined.

We are going to Queensferry Sports this week to place the order for the rainjackets for all those girls who have confirmed. If any other girls require them later, that is fine, we will be able to get some more ordered.

Well done to Keira who won the poll for the best goal of the season so far. This was the equalising thunderbolt against Manor Bullets at home early in the season. Second was Lily's great dipping shot against Upton and third was Elia's brave goal against Manor Bullets. Watch out for more polls!

Training is at Christleton Sports Hall on Wednesday 3 December just before 6 to just before 7. See you all there including we hope Meg and Emma.

v Greenleas away - Sat 29 November

UPDATE - 9PM FRI - THE GREENLEAS GAME HAS BEEN CALLED OFF

This Saturday we are playing Greenleas away in Wallasey. The game will kick off at 9:30. Please meet there at 9:00am and any players requiring a lift please contact Mike or Heather.

At the moment we do not know whether the game will be played at Castleway School or St Georges School and are awaiting a phone call from the opposition manager. We will put the venue and directions on this website as soon as we have them. Castleway School is the normal venue but sometimes the team switch to St Georges if the Castleway school pitch is too wet. Castleway school is on Castleway, off Leasowe Road in Wallasey.

Watch this site for more details.

News update

Here are a few news items that players and parents should be aware of:

Trip to Chester City FC

On Saturday 13 December the whole club is taking part in a visit to Chester City FC. This will comprise meeting at the training ground late morning and a quick session with the Chester City FC coaches. Then everyone will go to the Deva Stadium for a tour of the ground, meet the players and then watch Chester City v Notts County. Cost is £12 and adults can come for a small fee. Please let Mike or Heather know asap if any more girls are interested.

Trip to Liverpool Ladies v Birmingham City Ladies

On Sunday 14 December Heather is playing against Liverpool Ladies in Skelmersdale. For those of you who missed the recent trip to the Everton game, this is another opportunity to watch the Blues midfield maestro in action. We will be sharing lifts to this game. If anybody is interested, please let Heather or Mike know.

Club meeting

There is a club meeting in the Institute at 7:30 on Monday 24 November. This is mainly for coaches and managers of the boys and girls teams, but anyone who is interested in what is going on at the club is very welcome to attend.

Wallasey League

Mike went to last week's League meeting in Wallasey on behalf of the u16s and u12s. The league hope to have a website up and running within the next month, which will give access to results and league tables.

Weather

We are now getting into the time of the year when postponements due to the weather are likely, especially when playing on Wirral Borough Council pitches as the Council are usually cautious in order to protect the pitches. Please keep an eye on this website.

Wandering stars

AFC Waverton 0 - Wallasey Wanderers 5

Update - The Wallasey Wanderers manager rang up on Sunday and said that the scoreline on the website was wrong, it should have been 0-5 not 0-6. Cheers Andy.

Another game where the scoreline didn't reflect the match. Wallasey Wanderers are a top of the table side who can certainly play football but for the first half of this match the Waverton girls not only matched them but could have easily been winning. Sometimes all it would have needed would have been a stong kick in front of goal and we would have been in front by 2 or 3 goals. We did hit the woodwork though and forced the keeper into a number of saves.

In the second half the stronger Wanderers side were clearly on top, but overall the scoreline doesn't do justice to our performance.

MOM - Meg Mckie - excellent all round performance in and out of goal.

There is a bit of a pattern emerging here. Against Wallasey Wanderers, Greenleas Celtic and Upton we have been on top in the first half and let in goals in the second half. Anybody able to work out what the connection is? (clue it begins with L)

Thursday 20 November 2008

Time to vote!

Notice some changes to the website?

On your right you will see a poll. This is a new feature of the website and will change regularly. This week we are asking for your votes for goal of the season so far and we have 3 cracking goals to choose from. Can you remember them? If so let's have your vote!

Lily's goal from the half way line against Upton is winning at the moment.

Coming up soon - player profiles.

Game v Wallasey Wanderers this Sat (22)

This Saturday we play another high flying side, Wallasey Wanderers, at Waverton. Meet at 9:00 for a 9:30 kick off. Let's play well again this week.

All players are available except for Caitlin. Meg will be captain.

Training is again this Weds at Christleton Sports Centre at 6-7.

December fixtures

At tonight's League meeting the December fixtures were published, and we have a game every Saturday now until Christmas.

We start off at home to Ridgewood Rangers on December 6 with a kick off of 9:30. We then are at home again on 13 December when we take on Wirral Ladies (9:30 kick off) before finishing off 2008 with a relatively short trip to our friends in Eastham, Heygarth United with another 9:30 kick off on December 20.

Before that of course we have two November fixtures to fulfill. This Saturday we at home to top side Wallasey Wanderers (kick off 9:30, meet at 9) before travelling to play the Greenleas B side in Wallasey on November 29.

Heather and Mike will assume all the girls can make all of these fixtures, so please tell us asap if you cannot play on any of these days.

Saturday 15 November 2008

The bigger pitch err

Greenleas Celtic 5 - AFC Waverton 1

A tough encounter against one of the best sides in the League was played out on a huge pitch at St Georges School in Wallasey.

The Waverton girls started brightly and showed that they could deal with the challenge of one of the Leagues top sides, Greenleas Celtic. Great defending from Lucie, Meg and Holly kept the green hoops at bay but the strength of the home side eventually showed and Celtic took the lead.
Another goal followed from a move down the right.

2-0 at half time but a great Waverton move saw Keira's shot find the back of the net. Greenleas fought back and extended the lead despite some excellent goalkeeping from Caitlin.

This was a good performance against one of the best sides in the League. There were fantastic displays all round the pitch - Ellie's tackling, Elia's moves to create space, Meg's defending, Lucies running, Lily's tenacious approach, Keira's passes, and Emma's leadership. We could have easily have scored more, Lily went very close for example and we defended much better in midfield when we lost the ball than of late. Play like this against some of the other sides and we will be picking up more points.

MOM - Ellie Riste - how we loved the cartwheel when she came off in the second half!

Training 6pm Wednesday at Christleton Sports Centre. Be there.

Thursday 13 November 2008

v Greenleas Celtic away Sat 15 November

We play Greenleas Celtic this Saturday morning. The game will take place in Wallasey Village and will kick off at 11:00am. All players are to meet at St Georges Upper Primary School on Claremount Road, Wallasey, at 10:30.

Any players who need a lift please contact Mike on 07901 552261.

Greenleas Celtic are one of the best sides in the league so we can expect a tough game. We should though have a full squad out including Keira, now recovered from her argument with the Christleton School stairs.

Directions to the school are:

Take M53 to Junction 1. Turn off left along A554 north towards New Brighton. Soon after there is a slip road on the left. Don't take that one but take one straight after which takes you underneath the road you have left and doubles back down to a road you have just gone over called Leasowe Road. Carry straight on past Wallasey Village station to a roundabout. Go straight on down a one way street called St Johns Road. Turn left onto St Georges Road and then immediately right into Mayfield Road.

Then turn left onto Claremount Road and the school is 150m on the right. This the upper site not to be confused with the lower site which is on St Georges Road. Confusing? Just a little but useful just in case you get lost ask for directions and get sent to the lower site by mistake.

I can't find the postcode of the upper site School but the next road Lyndurst Road is CH45 6XA.

See you there!

Saturday 8 November 2008

Early sparkle fizzles out

AFC Waverton 2 - Upton 6

Just like some of the sparklers which had to be cleared from the pitch beforehand, Waverton started very brightly but fizzled out towards the end.

A great start to the game with Waverton taking the lead in the first 5 minutes when Keira cut in from the right and sneaked the ball in from a very narrow angle. A few minutes later the score was doubled through a brilliant 'David Bentley/David Beckham' goal. A loose ball came out and bounced just in front of Lily who then connected fantastically to hit a high dipping shot into the net. This was a great goal from a long way out.

Towards the end of the first half though Upton got back into the game, grabbed a couple of goals back, and took the lead in the second half. One of the first half goals was a penalty for handball, but which the Upton Manager says was harsh on us. Lucie had no chance with saving it as it nearly took the net into the back field.

Second half 'keeper Elia was powerless to stop some of the shots from the bigger Upton players. Waverton played some great passing football had some chances late on but couldn't recapture their first 15 minute form. Aira Temporal for the visitors was in fine form though and Elia made some great saves to keep her shots out.

For the second week in succession, we got into the lead and then let in goals in the second half. A bit more competitive in front of goal and keeping track of players and we would have been right in the game all the way through. Let's see if we can do that next week against a very good side Greenways Celtic.

Comments from the Upton manager: ' It was a good game and you played some really good passing football. You closed us down well and the penalty was very harsh. Good luck for the rest of the season'

Player of the match, for the second successive game : Lucie Parkinson

Starting line up:
Lucie

Saturday 1 November 2008

Muddy morning in the Port

Ellesmere Port Ladies 6 - AFC Waverton 2

Back to League action following last Saturday's cup win and a game against an Ellesmere Port side that included some of the ex Princes Villa players familar to the team from last season. On a muddy pitch at Christchurch School the Waverton girls started brightly and took the lead when pressure in the goalmouth resulted in an own goal as one of the Portites tried to clear the ball.

Ellesmere Port got a goal back soon after but Waverton regained the lead when Ellie's corner was turned back across the goal by Lily and Elia hit a great shot into the right hand corner of the goal.

The home side came back into the game and Lucy made some fantastic saves and was bravely diving around in the mud at the feet of the strikers to collect the ball. Ellesmere Port got two goals back and then in the second half extended their lead, but Waverton had numerous chances in an end to end game. Elia and Emma got in each other's way in front of goal and then Lily had a shot that just went inches wide of the post. Ellie had a great run through the centre of midfield but was tackled just as she was about to shoot. There were some tremendous little battles going on over the pitch with Ellie and the home number 3 tussling all game.

Lucy came out of goal to be replaced by Holly. Megan, who had been suffering with a bad neck all the way through the game, bravely played on but had to retire with about 5 minutes left leaving the sides unbalanced and a mountain to climb to narrow the margin.

A great performance and much closer than the scoreline suggests. Twice Waverton had the lead. Sharper finishing was the difference between the sides.

MOM - Lucy for her fantastic first half performance in goal (as voted by the opposition)

Team: Lucy, Holly, Megan, Elia, Lily, Ellie (capt), Emma

We hope Keira had a great day at the wedding and all the bridesmaid dress fittings paid off!

No training this Wednesday as both Heather and Mike are unavailable. Instead there will be a trip to watch Heather play against Everton (ko at Marine FC in Liverpool 7:30). Contact Mike or Heather for lifts. Further details and directions will be put on this website very soon.

Goals Galore

The first cup game for Waverton seen them travel some distance to play Wirral Rangers. We turned up at the venue with the cold weather setting in, and a very boggy pitch.

The five girls who played, had an outstanding attitude throughout, with Keira in goal first half, and Emma (who was not hobbling) second half everybody played a huge part in the team.

Waverton shot straight out of the blocks from the whistle, and from the 1st goal never looked like backing down. With Megan keeping it solid at the back, she allowed Emma to get forward and support Ellie Riste and Elia.

The first goal came from Elia, which was a great finish, and from there Waverton continued to push forward and create some great chances. Ellie Riste ran the show, and was a handful for Wirral Rangers, she must of covered every blade of grass on the pitch, and this showed after she neeted four goals, all of which were brilliant. She made runs like George Best, and left the defenders for dead!

Elia also netted three and again were super finishes, and she also never stopped and linked up very well with Ellie. Kiera kept encouraging at the back, and Megan looked very comfortable all game, she made some great runs, supported well, and also bagged a goal, she was unstoppable at the back. Emma played at the back first half with Megan, yet pushed on alot, and her attitude to go attack and defend was excellent, and also scored herself!

At half time Waverton looked very comfortable every outfield player had scored and confidence was high, which then lead us into the second half. Emma went into goal after a brilliant first half at the back with Megan, and Keira stepped outfield straight to action by scoring herself a goal.

Wirral Rangers now started to look more of a threat after the game with some great shots from there man of the match, who had a very powerful strike and forced Emma to make some great saves. Wirral Rangers attitude throughout the game was excellent and the supporters to were very friendly.

Ellie Riste carried on her brilliant first half along with Elia, and between them scored a handful of goals. Kiera also had a great impact coming out of goal and supported the front two well, whilst Megan held her own at the back.

Waverton ran out at 10 - 0 winners and through to the next round! Well Done Girls!

Man of the Match - Ellie Riste

Scored some great goals, and did not stop runing all game! Left her defenders falling over as she skill fully passed them, and no attacker could get close to our goal as she was always there to put a challenge in!

Training - there is not training this Wednesday due to half term

We will update the website with the match details for Saturday later in the week

Training this Wednesday (22 Oct)

Do anything nice this Saturday morning?

The weather was perfect for a football game and we are disappointed that we could not play the cup game against Wirral Rangers, especially as we had a full squad available. We think we now know what the issue is and it is nothing to do with the u12s. We will be attending the monthly league meeting on Monday 20 and will try to get the matter resolved.

The final outdoor midweek training session of 2008 will take place on Wednesday evening. Usual place, usual time (5:30). Please wear bright clothing as it could be a bit on the dark side after 6!

After half term we will go into the sports hall at Christleton High School from 6-7 on a Wednesday evening. The u14s and u16s will be sharing this with us, although we will train on our own.

Thursday 16 October 2008

UPDATE - Saturday's game postponed - UPDATE

The Wallasey League informed us at 10:15 this evening that the game due to be played on Saturday has been postponed. This is because of an administrative issue relating to information allegedly not being supplied to the league by a number of clubs, including AFC Waverton. This effects both the u12s and u16s and until this issue is resolved we cannot play any more league or cup games.

This is nothing to do with the information that we as u12s coaches supply, it is to do with the dates on which the Club's Welfare Officer attended an FA Child Protection Course. Our club has insisted this information has been supplied, but until this matter has been resolved both the u12s and u16s are suspended.

There is a league meeting on 20 October and it is hoped that this can be sorted out then.

Heather and Mike have decided not to run a training session instead, so we will see all players on Wednesday at Christleton Primary School at 5:30.

The League might now give us a game for either or both 25 October and 1 November, which are both in half term week. Please could any players who know that they are unavailable for those two dates please text Mike on 07901552261 asap

All players are asked to meet at 9:00am. Anybody wanting a lift from Waverton/Christleton please contact Mike or Heather.

The trip to Meols will take about 30 mins.

Training this Weds 15 Oct/Cup game on Saturday

Wasn't it great to see 3 AFC Waverton girls teams all playing on the field on Saturday morning?

Training as usual this Wednesday evening. 5:30 Christleton Primary School. This is the last but one of the weekday outdoor sessions and we'll be making the most of it.

We are away to Wirral Rangers on Saturday, at Acre Lane Bromborough kick off 9:30. This is a Cup game, postponed from September. Wirral Rangers have struggled to put out a team earlier in the season, so we are awaiting confirmation. Watch this space for news and directions.

We hope to take a picture of the whole squad this Saturday to go onto our home page, as that should be the first time that all the girls will have been together for a match.

The League will release the November fixtures on October 20 and as soon as we know what they are, we'll put them up on the website. We hope they don't give us a game for 1 November as it is half term weekend and some of you may be away.

We'll be confirming the orders for the Wet Weather Tops this Wed and Sat. You'll soon be needing them.

Sunday 12 October 2008

Never write off a Waverton side - AFC Waverton 3 - Manor Bullets 3

The second game of the season brought the first point and how well deserved it was. The visitors took the lead when Lily Worden in the home goal made a great save but was powerless to stop the follow up shot.

The Bullets then scored two great goals from long range efforts which left the Waverton 'keeper with no chance of saving them. Lily made another excellent save to keep the score down.

3--0 game over? No chance, the Waverton girls showed spirit and determination and great work through the middle saw Elia Williams - Serrano through on goal. The 'keeper saved the shot, but as the defence crashed into her Elia pounced on the loose ball to score her first ever goal for a club side.

The goal gave the girls confidence and the half time team talk was very positive. Ellie Riste took over in goal with Lily going into the left midfield berth and although under pressure for periods, the home side created a number of chances. Emma Harrison was put through on a one on one with the 'keeper and was unlucky to drag her shot just to the left of the goal whilst Keira Berry also went close twice, once with a free kick which just sailed over the bar.

Megan Mckie ran with the ball all the way through from the back and was unlucky not to take the ball all the way into the Bullets net. Emma though did make up for her earlier miss when she hit the ball in from close range and then ran off to celebrate her first goal for the club.

The next goal would prove crucial and it came from the home side when Lily Worden played a delighful ball to Keira and the captain struck a fantastic shot into the roof of the net. Absolutely fantastic stuff and the celebrations of the team showed just what it meant to get level from being dead and buried in the first 20 minutes.

The Bullets, with their bigger squad, pushed for the winner in the dying minutes, but with Lucy and Holly doing a sterling job defending down on the right side and Ellie Riste in goal clearing her lines, the home side held on. A great game, a great performance and something to really build on.

Player of the match as chosen by Manor Bullets - Elia Williams -Serrano. - a fantastic and well deserved achievement for the youngest member of the team making only her second appearance in club football.

Wednesday 8 October 2008

Manor Bullets on Saturday 11

Manor Bullets from Wallasey visit Waverton for our second league game of the season this Saturday. The game will kick off at 9:30 and all players are asked to meet at Waverton at 9:00. The u16s play on the same pitch as us straight afterwards so we have to start promptly (and because Mike is dashing off to Wembley).

The match will be on the school field. The club have said that the car park is likely to get very busy this Saturday because of a number of matches being played and have urged car sharing if travelling from outside of the village.

A report on the game will be posted on this website over the weekend.

See you there!

Saturday 4 October 2008

Training this Wed/Match at home on Sat 11

Thanks to all the girls who came to training on Saturday. We're still trying to work who the goalkeeper and coach were on the field with us, but it looked a pretty serious session. Ours was a good workout and the small sided game allowed for plenty of one on one practice. There was some great finishing. Training will take place this Wednesday evening at 5:30 at Christleton Primary School.

Our next match is on Saturday (11 October) and is against Manor. The game will kick off at 9:30 and all players are asked to report at 9:00. The game will be played on the Waverton School Field rather than the Queen Field. Park in the same place.

Thursday 2 October 2008

Why does it always rain on me?

UPDATE - SATURDAY'S GAME AWAY AT DELTA COLTS HAS BEEN POSTPONED BECAUSE OXTON PARK IS WATERLOGGED.

TRAINING WILL TAKE PLACE AT THE KING GEORGE FIELD (BEHIND THE PIT) IN CHRISTLETON FROM 10 -11 INSTEAD. SEE YOU THERE!

We hope to have an article in the Chester Chronicle and Chester Standard this week about the girls set up. We have three competitive girls teams now, which makes us one of the best clubs for girls football in the Chester area. Coupled with excellent coaches (!) and pitches, AFC Waverton is the place to be.

We had a meeting with the Football Development Officer for Chester last week and we will be developing links with local primary schools and Christleton High School. This will involve coaches from our club going into primary schools such as Christleton, Waverton, and Barrow and running some coaching sessions with the hope of drawing girls into a club environment. More details to follow.

Tuesday 30 September 2008

Directions to Delta Colts

The game v Delta Colts will kick off at 12:30 this Saturday. All players are to meet at Oxton Park at 12 noon. Lifts are available, please ask Heather or Mike.

Oxton Park is not in Oxton at all, but in Liscard. The field is on Poulton Road opposite the Rose and Crown pub. The field is small and there is a play area at the back where younger children or substitutes can play on the equipment (bet Keira is the first to give it a go).

Take M53 to end but don't follow the tunnel signs, instead take ramp left on to A5088 signposted 'All Docks'. Follow this road to a roundabout. Turn left onto Poulton Bridge Road and then a little further turn right onto Poulton Road. The road goes over the top of the Wallasey Tunnel road and then a little further on just past the junction with Oxton Road, you'll see the Rose and Crown on your right. Park on the road and the field is opposite the pub. If you have a sat navvy thing the postcode of the pub is CH44 4DE.

Paste CH44 4De into the following link, click 'birds eye view' and you will have a clear unobstructed view of the pitch:

Saturday 27 September 2008

AFC Waverton 2 - Irby Colts 4

Waverton's first game in the new league ended in a defeat at home to Irby Colts, but the performance was much closer than the scoreline suggests and the girls can be pleased with first outing. Only 3 girls from the league side last year were in the starting line up, which makes the display even more impressive and one on which the team will build.

After 5 minutes Waverton took the lead when captain Keira Berry scored after picking up a ball on the right and beat the 'keeper. The Wirral side got back into it when pressure on the home defence resulted in an own goal. Soon after Emma Harrison nearly put the home side ahead again, but then Ellie Fowler for Irby Colts scored twice to give the visitors a clear advantage. Just before half time though, Keira Berry grabbed a second goal latching on to a lovely through ball from debut player Elia Williams-Serrano.

In the second half Waverton had numerous chances to equalise with Keira Berry and Ellie Riste going close. The football played was excellent with some great passing moves between Keira Berry and Lily Worden. However Irby, who were generally well marshalled by Megan McKee and Lucy Parkinson at the back scored a fourth through a long range shot which Holly Carter in the home goal was powerless to stop.

MOM chosen by Irby Colts - Keira Berry

Training - Wednesday 1 October at Christleton Primary 5:30-6:30.
Next match - Saturday 4 October - venue and opposition to be confirmed.

Wednesday 24 September 2008

game v Irby Sat 27 Sept

Fingers crossed we should be kicking off the season on Saturday morning when we welcome Irby to Waverton. All players are asked to meet by 9:00 am. Full home kit, boots and shinpads are required. The early start is because our u16s will be playing after us.

The team will be:

Keira (captain), Lily, Lucy, Elia, Emma, Megan, Ellie, Holly.

Since this is our first home game of the season, there will be a minute silence before kick off as a mark of respect following the tragic loss of Rachel's mum last month.

Sunday 21 September 2008

Training Weds 24 Sept

Training will take place this Wednesday evening at Christleton Primary School, starting at 5:30. All players are asked to attend.

Wirral Rangers game off this Sat 20 Sept

Ah it's so frustrating !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The game scheduled for this Saturday has been called off as Wirral Rangers cannot get enough players for a team this weekend.

We will train instead at Christleton Primary School at 10am and finish at 11.

One day we will play a game.

Saturday 13 September 2008

Irby game postponed/Training instead

The league has tonight called off all midweek fixtures meaning that the home game scheduled for Tuesday 16 September against Irby has been called off. The reason is that the League feel that the light is now not good enough to play the games safely.

We will however hold a training session 5:30-6:30 instead of playing the game. This session will be held at WAVERTON not Christleton Primary and all the girls are asked to attend.

Our next game will be away to Wirral Rangers on Saturday 20 September. All players making their own way there are asked to meet at Acre Lane Brombrough at 9:00. The ground is easy to find from the A41 and directions will be available on the website later in the week. There are numerous games on the field that day and it is important that we arrive on time ready for kick off. We hope to arrange lifts from Christleton/Waverton for those that need them. Please let Mike or Heather know if you require a lift.

The kits for those girls that do not have them will be given out at training on Tuesday.

The schedule for the rest of September is:

Tue 16 Sept - Training session 5:30-6:30 Waverton
Sat 20 Sept - v Wirral Rangers away Acre Lane Bromborough meet 9:30
Wed 24 Sept - Training session 5:30-6:30 Christleton Primary School
Sat 27 Sept - v Irby Colts home Waverton meet 9:30.

Friday 12 September 2008

Tuesday 26 August 2008

Rachel

It is so sad to learn of the tragic death of Rachel's mum. Celia was killed in a car crash on Thursday 21 August whilst on her way to work in Widnes. Celia was always on the touchline supporting and encouraging Rachel and the rest of the girls. The thoughts of all of us in the u12s team are with Rachel and her family.

There will be a minute's silence before the first game of the season (home to Heygarth) on Saturday 6 September.

Sunday 24 August 2008

Signing on session - Saturday 23 August

All available players are asked to meet at the Queen Field Waverton this Saturday, 23 August at 9:30 am to complete their club and league registration forms.

We will need:

  • AFC Waverton joining form plus cheque for £70 (some of the players have already done this)
  • 2 passport photos and photocopy of either birth certificate or passport for the League registration (I have these from some of the players)
  • Players and parent/guardian to sign Wallasey Girls League Registration.

Copies of all forms will be available on Saturday.

Completing this documentation in critical and we have to have it completed this week otherwise we could be faced with sanctions from the League or even worse. Players not signed on in time will not be able to play in the league games and if we can't register a minimum of 7 players we might lose our place in the league.

Please call Mike if you cannot make Saturday morning - 07901 552261 as we will have to make alternative arrangements.

Club and League registrations needed

Registration forms are on their way to us from the Wallasey League for 2008/09 season. We will need to complete these swiftly and return them. All players will need to submit a photocopy of their birth certificate and two passport photos.

Some girls have already given me this documentation including some of the new players. If parents can get this information together, I will collect it and collate it all after August 9.

We also need club registration forms back and a cheque for £70 which is the fee for 2008/09. Again I will collect these or you can forward to my home address. Email me at mike.worden@virgin.net or ring/text 07901 552261 and I will give you more details.

We have had interest from a number of new girls wishing to join the u12s for the new season and all players from 2007/08 season need to re-register to reserve their place in the squad. This includes Lucy and Holly who are stepping up from u10s and for whom places will be reserved for them to register.

Enjoy the summer and keep up the footy practice.

Mike

Tuesday 8 July 2008

It's the Wirral for Waverton

After weeks of agony, we have finally reached an agreement about which league the u12s will be playing in next season. Thrawted by insufficient teams in the Chester League and too many teams in the Cheshire Girls League, we have now been accepted into the Wallasey League for 2008/09. This is great news for the u12s who are certainly ready for another season of competitive football. It will mean playing home matches at Waverton (or possibly Christleton Primary occasionally) and away matches in the Wirral area. Another piece of good news of course is that it is on grass! Games will be played on Saturday mornings but kick off times may vary.

Our newly formed u16 girls side will also be playing in this League. It is a strong and well established girls league which includes sides such as Heygarth who we recently played in a friendly.

We need to get registrations sorted as soon as possible and once we get the requirements from the League, we shall be in touch with all parents before the start of the school holidays.

Incidentally the u14s will now be playing in the Chester and District League for 2008/09.

Saturday 5 July 2008

Strike, spare, split, help.

Hope all of the girls enjoyed the night out on Friday. The manager of Ten Pin says he should be able to do all the repairs to the lanes by the end of the weekend.

We need to tie up the registrations for 2008/09 before the start of the school holidays. We have circulated the club registration forms but if anybody hasn't got one, please contact Mike by this email link or on 07901552261. We will send round more detailed information about this via email or text.

We will update you over the next couple of weeks regarding the League position for next season.

The Chester and District Junior League has only had two applications from u12 girls sides for next season and so will not be running a league at our age group. This is extremely disappointing given the success of the League last season and the large number of girls playing football in the Chester area at this age group with their schools.

We are on the reserve list for the Cheshire Girls League and will find out on Monday 7 July if we can enter that league. We are also making enquiries of the Wallasey League. Failing that we have a couple of more ideas, but whatever happens we will be running an u12s team next year.

We'll keep this website updated throughout the summer.

Friday 27 June 2008

Curtain closes on fine season (UPDATED)

Umbro Soccer Sixes tournament - Poynton Sunday 22 June

The season which started back last September came to an end at the Poynton tournament, one of the most prestigious events on the junior football calendar. The girls competed very well against much more experienced opposition and more than held their own for most of the time. The group included sides such as Blackpool, Curson Ashton and Macclesfield Town, some of the best girls sides in the North West, and the girls should be proud of their great performances.

Thanks to Chris Rhodes and Simon Mageean for the photographs. Click on them to download a better resolution copy.

  • Funniest moment - Keira asking how old all the opposition girls were just two minutes into the first game

  • Best moment - Lily's goal against Halton JFC
  • Best run - Ellie Riste against Poynton JFC - unstoppable from one end to the other

  • Best save - D'arcy against Macclesfield. Suberb once again between the sticks which brought compliments from the opposition manager.

  • Best free kick - Keira's long range effort following a foul on Ellie Riste that Rachel nearly scored from.

  • Best performance - against Halton JFC. So unlucky not to win. Best dressed - Gabi with socks on top of trackie bottoms
  • Best Premier League footballer impression - Olivia complaining to the ref after being dumped on the floor in the first game.

  • Best defensive pairing - Cara and Ellie M. U12s loss, u14s gain.

Who was that sub?

AFC Waverton u14 3 - AFC Waverton u12 0

Despite the scoreline this was a great performance from the girls against their older and bigger opponents. The u14s dominated for the first five minutes with the u12s wondering whether they would ever get out of their own half. After weathering the storm though, the passing football so much on show this season clicked into place and the u12 started to take more control of the game.

At the back, Cara and Ellie M, ablely assisted by Holly, cleared up most of the threats in front of Rachel in goal, whilst Keira, Ellie R and Lily worked the ball up to Lucy and Olivia up front. Olivia, Keira and Lily were unlucky not to get on the score sheet in the first half.

In the second half however, the older girls showed their strength, taking the lead early in the second half. Two more goals followed but with just five minutes left, the u12s brought on a sub in a last ditch attempt to turn the game around. Looking rather older than an u12 she showed some nice touches including having a shot that nearly put the brave u14 'keeper, who saved it, halfway to Christleton. Looking like she could play at a higher level, she also set up Olivia and Ellie R, who were both unlucky not to score.

The super sub. Don't we know her from somewhere?

The super sub even took a goal kick, which resulted in the charge of light brigade by all other 19 players into the far box in expectation. Route one football at its worst!

Well done to all the u12 and u14 girls for this well fought out friendly. Thanks to David Harker and Chris Rhodes for sharing refereering duties.
