Ridgewood Rangers v Wirral Rangers - League awards home win

Wirral Hawks won the top of the table clash with our opponents from last week Wallasey Wanderers whilst Greenleas Celtic keep up the pressure on the top two with a 7-0 win at Heygarth United. At the other end of the table Greenleas remain bottom having not played today of course but the teams around us in the bottom half all lost although Ridgewood Rangers were awarded the points after Wirral Rangers failed to fulfil the fixture. Our next three games are against teams around us so we have a chance to move well up the League before the Christmas break.

Greenleas game postponed

Apologies for the late calls about the postponement of the Greenleas game, but we only got the news at 9pm on Friday night. Greenleas were unable to field a side and their Secretary had mistakenly thought they were playing Heygarth and so had informed Heygarth earlier in the day that it was off. Heygarth, who were due to play the Greenleas Celtic side, then got a call at 9pm to say their game was back on!

The postponement was not all bad news as we were short of players anyway. Lily and Lucie were unavailable and Emma rang in sick in the morning. Then in the evening, Meg who had been suffering all week called in sick too, leaving us with only 5 players. The league rules say that we have to play the game even if we have 5 players available otherwise we lose the points and the club gets fined.

We are going to Queensferry Sports this week to place the order for the rainjackets for all those girls who have confirmed. If any other girls require them later, that is fine, we will be able to get some more ordered.

Well done to Keira who won the poll for the best goal of the season so far. This was the equalising thunderbolt against Manor Bullets at home early in the season. Second was Lily's great dipping shot against Upton and third was Elia's brave goal against Manor Bullets. Watch out for more polls!

Training is at Christleton Sports Hall on Wednesday 3 December just before 6 to just before 7. See you all there including we hope Meg and Emma.

v Greenleas away - Sat 29 November

UPDATE - 9PM FRI - THE GREENLEAS GAME HAS BEEN CALLED OFF

This Saturday we are playing Greenleas away in Wallasey. The game will kick off at 9:30. Please meet there at 9:00am and any players requiring a lift please contact Mike or Heather.

At the moment we do not know whether the game will be played at Castleway School or St Georges School and are awaiting a phone call from the opposition manager. We will put the venue and directions on this website as soon as we have them. Castleway School is the normal venue but sometimes the team switch to St Georges if the Castleway school pitch is too wet. Castleway school is on Castleway, off Leasowe Road in Wallasey.

Watch this site for more details.

News update

Here are a few news items that players and parents should be aware of:

Trip to Chester City FC

On Saturday 13 December the whole club is taking part in a visit to Chester City FC. This will comprise meeting at the training ground late morning and a quick session with the Chester City FC coaches. Then everyone will go to the Deva Stadium for a tour of the ground, meet the players and then watch Chester City v Notts County. Cost is £12 and adults can come for a small fee. Please let Mike or Heather know asap if any more girls are interested.

Trip to Liverpool Ladies v Birmingham City Ladies

On Sunday 14 December Heather is playing against Liverpool Ladies in Skelmersdale. For those of you who missed the recent trip to the Everton game, this is another opportunity to watch the Blues midfield maestro in action. We will be sharing lifts to this game. If anybody is interested, please let Heather or Mike know.

Club meeting

There is a club meeting in the Institute at 7:30 on Monday 24 November. This is mainly for coaches and managers of the boys and girls teams, but anyone who is interested in what is going on at the club is very welcome to attend.

Wallasey League

Mike went to last week's League meeting in Wallasey on behalf of the u16s and u12s. The league hope to have a website up and running within the next month, which will give access to results and league tables.

Weather

We are now getting into the time of the year when postponements due to the weather are likely, especially when playing on Wirral Borough Council pitches as the Council are usually cautious in order to protect the pitches. Please keep an eye on this website.

Wandering stars

AFC Waverton 0 - Wallasey Wanderers 5

Update - The Wallasey Wanderers manager rang up on Sunday and said that the scoreline on the website was wrong, it should have been 0-5 not 0-6. Cheers Andy.

Another game where the scoreline didn't reflect the match. Wallasey Wanderers are a top of the table side who can certainly play football but for the first half of this match the Waverton girls not only matched them but could have easily been winning. Sometimes all it would have needed would have been a stong kick in front of goal and we would have been in front by 2 or 3 goals. We did hit the woodwork though and forced the keeper into a number of saves.

In the second half the stronger Wanderers side were clearly on top, but overall the scoreline doesn't do justice to our performance.

MOM - Meg Mckie - excellent all round performance in and out of goal.

There is a bit of a pattern emerging here. Against Wallasey Wanderers, Greenleas Celtic and Upton we have been on top in the first half and let in goals in the second half. Anybody able to work out what the connection is? (clue it begins with L)

Time to vote!

Notice some changes to the website?

On your right you will see a poll. This is a new feature of the website and will change regularly. This week we are asking for your votes for goal of the season so far and we have 3 cracking goals to choose from. Can you remember them? If so let's have your vote!

Lily's goal from the half way line against Upton is winning at the moment.

Coming up soon - player profiles.

December fixtures

At tonight's League meeting the December fixtures were published, and we have a game every Saturday now until Christmas.

We start off at home to Ridgewood Rangers on December 6 with a kick off of 9:30. We then are at home again on 13 December when we take on Wirral Ladies (9:30 kick off) before finishing off 2008 with a relatively short trip to our friends in Eastham, Heygarth United with another 9:30 kick off on December 20.

Before that of course we have two November fixtures to fulfill. This Saturday we at home to top side Wallasey Wanderers (kick off 9:30, meet at 9) before travelling to play the Greenleas B side in Wallasey on November 29.

Heather and Mike will assume all the girls can make all of these fixtures, so please tell us asap if you cannot play on any of these days.

The bigger pitch err

Greenleas Celtic 5 - AFC Waverton 1

A tough encounter against one of the best sides in the League was played out on a huge pitch at St Georges School in Wallasey.

The Waverton girls started brightly and showed that they could deal with the challenge of one of the Leagues top sides, Greenleas Celtic. Great defending from Lucie, Meg and Holly kept the green hoops at bay but the strength of the home side eventually showed and Celtic took the lead.
Another goal followed from a move down the right.

2-0 at half time but a great Waverton move saw Keira's shot find the back of the net. Greenleas fought back and extended the lead despite some excellent goalkeeping from Caitlin.

This was a good performance against one of the best sides in the League. There were fantastic displays all round the pitch - Ellie's tackling, Elia's moves to create space, Meg's defending, Lucies running, Lily's tenacious approach, Keira's passes, and Emma's leadership. We could have easily have scored more, Lily went very close for example and we defended much better in midfield when we lost the ball than of late. Play like this against some of the other sides and we will be picking up more points.

MOM - Ellie Riste - how we loved the cartwheel when she came off in the second half!

Training 6pm Wednesday at Christleton Sports Centre. Be there.

v Greenleas Celtic away Sat 15 November

We play Greenleas Celtic this Saturday morning. The game will take place in Wallasey Village and will kick off at 11:00am. All players are to meet at St Georges Upper Primary School on Claremount Road, Wallasey, at 10:30.

Any players who need a lift please contact Mike on 07901 552261.

Greenleas Celtic are one of the best sides in the league so we can expect a tough game. We should though have a full squad out including Keira, now recovered from her argument with the Christleton School stairs.

Directions to the school are:

Take M53 to Junction 1. Turn off left along A554 north towards New Brighton. Soon after there is a slip road on the left. Don't take that one but take one straight after which takes you underneath the road you have left and doubles back down to a road you have just gone over called Leasowe Road. Carry straight on past Wallasey Village station to a roundabout. Go straight on down a one way street called St Johns Road. Turn left onto St Georges Road and then immediately right into Mayfield Road.

Then turn left onto Claremount Road and the school is 150m on the right. This the upper site not to be confused with the lower site which is on St Georges Road. Confusing? Just a little but useful just in case you get lost ask for directions and get sent to the lower site by mistake.

I can't find the postcode of the upper site School but the next road Lyndurst Road is CH45 6XA.

See you there!

Early sparkle fizzles out

AFC Waverton 2 - Upton 6

Just like some of the sparklers which had to be cleared from the pitch beforehand, Waverton started very brightly but fizzled out towards the end.

A great start to the game with Waverton taking the lead in the first 5 minutes when Keira cut in from the right and sneaked the ball in from a very narrow angle. A few minutes later the score was doubled through a brilliant 'David Bentley/David Beckham' goal. A loose ball came out and bounced just in front of Lily who then connected fantastically to hit a high dipping shot into the net. This was a great goal from a long way out.

Towards the end of the first half though Upton got back into the game, grabbed a couple of goals back, and took the lead in the second half. One of the first half goals was a penalty for handball, but which the Upton Manager says was harsh on us. Lucie had no chance with saving it as it nearly took the net into the back field.

Second half 'keeper Elia was powerless to stop some of the shots from the bigger Upton players. Waverton played some great passing football had some chances late on but couldn't recapture their first 15 minute form. Aira Temporal for the visitors was in fine form though and Elia made some great saves to keep her shots out.

For the second week in succession, we got into the lead and then let in goals in the second half. A bit more competitive in front of goal and keeping track of players and we would have been right in the game all the way through. Let's see if we can do that next week against a very good side Greenways Celtic.

Comments from the Upton manager: ' It was a good game and you played some really good passing football. You closed us down well and the penalty was very harsh. Good luck for the rest of the season'

Player of the match, for the second successive game : Lucie Parkinson

Starting line up:
Lucie
Holly Meg
Elia Keira Lily
Ellie

Training 6-7 this Wednesday evening at Christleton Sports Centre. Go into the sports centre reception (not the school) by the second gate coming away from the village and turn left at the reception desk.Bring trainers not astro boots

Muddy morning in the Port

Ellesmere Port Ladies 6 - AFC Waverton 2

Back to League action following last Saturday's cup win and a game against an Ellesmere Port side that included some of the ex Princes Villa players familar to the team from last season. On a muddy pitch at Christchurch School the Waverton girls started brightly and took the lead when pressure in the goalmouth resulted in an own goal as one of the Portites tried to clear the ball.

Ellesmere Port got a goal back soon after but Waverton regained the lead when Ellie's corner was turned back across the goal by Lily and Elia hit a great shot into the right hand corner of the goal.

The home side came back into the game and Lucy made some fantastic saves and was bravely diving around in the mud at the feet of the strikers to collect the ball. Ellesmere Port got two goals back and then in the second half extended their lead, but Waverton had numerous chances in an end to end game. Elia and Emma got in each other's way in front of goal and then Lily had a shot that just went inches wide of the post. Ellie had a great run through the centre of midfield but was tackled just as she was about to shoot. There were some tremendous little battles going on over the pitch with Ellie and the home number 3 tussling all game.

Lucy came out of goal to be replaced by Holly. Megan, who had been suffering with a bad neck all the way through the game, bravely played on but had to retire with about 5 minutes left leaving the sides unbalanced and a mountain to climb to narrow the margin.

A great performance and much closer than the scoreline suggests. Twice Waverton had the lead. Sharper finishing was the difference between the sides.

MOM - Lucy for her fantastic first half performance in goal (as voted by the opposition)

Team: Lucy, Holly, Megan, Elia, Lily, Ellie (capt), Emma

We hope Keira had a great day at the wedding and all the bridesmaid dress fittings paid off!

No training this Wednesday as both Heather and Mike are unavailable. Instead there will be a trip to watch Heather play against Everton (ko at Marine FC in Liverpool 7:30). Contact Mike or Heather for lifts. Further details and directions will be put on this website very soon.
