Arrangements for the New Year

We hope that you all have had a great Christmas.

Training will start again on Saturday 12 January at Upton with the new fixtures starting again on Saturday 26 January. Can all players please meet at 10:15 am at Upton on 12th. We will train until 11:30. There will be a small charge to cover the cost of hiring the pitch.

Unfortunately we will not be able to train on 19 January as both Mike and Heather are away. We are though looking to try to get some mid week training venues sorted.

Best wishes for 2008.

Heather and Mike

Saturday 15 December 2007

Have a good Christmas break.

Saturday morning (15 Dec) saw the final get together before the Christmas break. Thanks to all the girls who came to the training session.

If any of the girls did not pick up a copy of the programme from the postponed Birmingham City v Bristol Academy game, just ask Heather and she'll give you a copy. There's an excellent photo of our Waverton team in the programme.

This Tuesday (18 Dec) the League is holding a meeting to discuss the arrangements for the girls league for the remainder of the season. We shall be represented at the meeting and will keep you informed of what has been agreed and what the new fixtures are. Keep an eye on this website.

We will be putting in an order for the AFC Waverton winter training tops in January. For those girls who do not currently have them, we would like to know whether you would like us to order one for you. There will be a charge unfortunately. We'll be giving out details and taking orders when we return after the Christmas break.

Finally Heather and Mike wish all the girls and their families a very Merry Christmas and hope that Santa brings you some football related presents.

Training confirmed for this Saturday (15th)

Training has now been confirmed for this coming Saturday (15 December). Please meet Heather and Mike at Upton at 10:15 for a 10:30 start.

This is our last chance for a kick about together before Christmas.

There will be a small charge for each player to cover the cost of the hire of the pitch. Please bring training kit and warm clothes. Please tel/text Mike on 07901 552261 or email if you can't make it.

See you there!

PS - did anybody pick up Lily's tracksuit bottoms on Saturday?

Close encounters of the rainy kind

The cold and wet conditions inspired the Waverton girls who played some fantastic football in this game against the League leaders. Indeed, the Vicars Cross Dynamos manager thought that Waverton shouldn't have lost this game as our girls played such great football and were dominant for much of the 50 minutes.

Waverton started brightly and took a lead within the first 10 minutes when Ellie Riste running in from the left, slid the ball into the corner of the net. Not long after, Keira Berry, who was in sparkling form all morning, scored with a great shot from the right.

The League leaders though came back into the game and took advantage of the Waverton defence's failure to clear to get a goal back and then an equaliser. Katie Pulford made a fantastic block to deny a certain goal. In added time at the end of the first half, the Dynamos won a free kick on the edge of the box. The resulting kick was hit high and perfectly beyond Darcy's reach into the top corner.

In the second half Waverton piled on the pressure but despite numerous efforts could just not get the ball into the net. Olivia Rhodes and Keira Berry both shot just wide. Lily Worden and Keira Berry combined well to create a number of chances down the right. At the other end, Rachel Higham and Gabby Tuite swept up most of the threats and Darcy was outstanding once again. However, the Dynamos extended their lead following a break away as Waverton went for the equaliser, with a low hard shot from the right giving Darcy little chance .

Another great performance from the League's best footballing side!

A training session will be held at Upton next Saturday morning. Meet at 10:15 for a 10:30 start but please keep an eye on this website for any updates on the arrangements. There will be a small charge to cover the cost of hiring the pitch but most parents have said that they are happy to pay this. At least the weather won't stop us training on the astroturf.

Have a good weekend girls! Get well soon Heather.

Vicars Cross game this Saturday (December 8)

Our final competitive game before Christmas will take place this Saturday, when we take on league leaders Vicars Cross Dynamos. All players should meet at Upton at 10:30. Please tele/text Mike on 07901 552261 or by email if you are unable to play.

We shall be returning the Birmingham City deposits to parents and players this Saturday morning. The coach company have been very good and the small deposit that we have lost will be paid for by the Club.

See you all there on Saturday!

Blues trip rained off

It had to happen didn't it?
Birmingham City Ladies hadn't had a match called off all season. Until now!

The rain came down in buckets in the West Midlands on Saturday night and made the already heavy pitch unplayable. Fortunately the results of the pitch inspection got to us before most people had left home to catch the bus and we managed to contact the bus company before the coach left for Waverton.

So apologies to all and thanks to Kate for contacting all of the u14s. We'll fix another trip up for later in the season.

Saturday 1 December 2007

Princes Villa 1 Waverton 3

Back to winning ways for the Waverton girls in the penultimate game of the Autumn campaign. Waverton gained a two goal advantage early on, thanks to a screamer from Cara Grimes and another goal from top scorer Olivia Rhodes.

Princes Villa pulled one back in the second half from a looping shot from the right which just bounced off the underside of the bar and beyond Darcy's reach. The advantage though was regained near the end of the match when Ellie Riste, who had been in outstanding form all through the game, ran from her own half, beat a couple of defenders, before calmly placing the ball just inside the Villa 'keeper's right hand post. Darcy, with her super new gloves, was once again instrumental in keeping the score down with a series of fine saves in the second half.

Well done girls! Next up are high flying Vicars Cross Dynamoes on Saturday 8 December. Meet at Upton at 10:30am. As usual, please tel/text (07901 552261) or email Mike if you cannot make it.

Arrangements for Birmingham City trip

Arrangements have now been finalised for the trip to Birmingham City Ladies on Sunday. Please meet at Waverton Village Hall by 10:15 at the latest, as the coach will leave at 10:30.

A local girls team, Bournville Warriors, will be the ball girls, but the Waverton u12s and u14s should get a kick around on the pitch beforehand, and will get to meet the players either before or after the game. Therefore please wear Waverton kits, track suit bottoms, wet weather tops if you have them and trainers. Heather thinks that the pitch might cut up so the club would prefer trainers to be worn rather than boots. Please bring a packed lunch and a drink. The ground has a small cafe where we can get hot drinks and who knows, maybe even a wagon wheel!

The game kicks off at 2pm at Redditch. Opponents are high flying Bristol Academy. However, our own Heather has been playing well at the centre of the Blues midfield, providing yet another inch perfect corner for Sunday's winning goal against Blackburn. See the Birmingham City ladies website for details.

We should be be back in Waverton by about 7pm.

Before all that excitement however, we have a league game against Princes Villa on Saturday. Meet at Upton at 10:30.

Any problems or questions please call/text Mike on 07901 552261 or email

Saturday 24 November 2007

Waverton 1 Malpas 1

Not a managerial brolly in sight despite the threat of rain from the grey Upton skies. At least the coaches jobs would be safe after this performance.

The return match against Malpas was as close as the first one and once again the points were shared.

The first half saw some great football played with Katie Pulford (well marshalled by Gabby Tuite) and Rachel Higham showing how far they have come on this season. Darcy Tuite made a fantastic save halfway through the first period to keep out Malpas. At the other end, the lone striker Keira Berry was putting in a great effort to put Waverton into the lead.

Going into the break, the score was goaless. Lily Worden, Ellie Riste and Olivia Rhodes came on at the start of the second period and the girls kept up the pressure on Malpas. It was though the red shirted girls who took the lead from close range. Waverton fought back and Lily Worden set up Olivia Rhodes in front of goal. Olivia's effort just went the wrong side of the post, but minutes later she made no mistake from much further out, her shot sneaking in at the left hand post. Cue the latest goal celebration, 'the magician's hands' ala Nicolas Anelka.

There was nothing much between the sides for the rest of the game. Darcy Tuite made another excellent save palming a difficult shot over her bar, whilst at the other end, a Keira Berry looping shot was just tipped over too.

All in all a great game and a performance to give the girls confidence as they go into the final two matches of the first part of this season.

Quote of the match: 'I am sorry I can't take your money as it might fall out of my pocket' - the referee's response to being offered his fee before the game. Anyway you should have seen the look he gave Heather when she dared to suggest it was a Waverton throw midway through the first half!

Latest news on the Birmingham trip on 2 December is that we now have a very good turnout with most of the U14s coming along. Therefore we will be confirming the coach although we might ask for very small additional charge to break even.
Next game is Saturday 1 December at Upton against Princes Villa. Meet at 10:30

League game against Malpas on Saturday

This Saturday morning (November 24) we have a league game against Malpas. All players should report to Upton for 10:30. Please email or tel/text Mike on 07901 552261 if you cannot make it.

We had a great game against Malpas in October which ended in a 2-2 draw with Ellie Riste and Olivia Rhodes getting the goals, so let's hope we have another good game.

The weatherman tells me that Saturday morning is going to be cold, so please bring warm clothes to wear.

See you there!

'It's just like watching Brazil'

Inch perfect passes, cheeky backheels, clever flicks, deft body swerves, .... all from the team in the yellow shirts. Brazil 1970?
No, Waverton Ladies u12s 2007!

Unfortunately though there was no Pele or Jairzinho to apply the finish and despite the possession, the girls came away pointless from Saturday's game with Princes Villa United .

Princes Villa took the lead early in the first half and had a number of shots at goal soon after, which Darcy dealt with comfortably. Waverton got back into the game and following a great move, Olivia was presented with the best chance of the half to equalise, but just couldn't get a solid shot in at goal on her weaker foot.

It was in the second half though where Waverton played their best stuff, with some excellent passing and movement. Chance after chance was created but the girls could just not apply the desired finish. 2-0 to Princes Villa United the final score with the Ellesmere Port side completing the double over us.
Quote of the day: "Treat the ball as if it was a £20 note". Parent and stand in referee Derek Tuite's advice at half time (but as long as you don't pick it up somebody should have added!)

Next up, Malpas at Upton on Saturday 24th. Meet at 10:30. Please email or phone/text Mike if you cannot make it.

A number of girls and parents have paid up for the Birmingham City trip on 2 December. So far we have confirmed and received payment from: Ellie R, Ellie M, Katie, Sophie, Lily, Cara, and Rachel. For any other girls and parents (we know Olivia can't come), we need confirmation by this Tuesday (20 November) as we have to make final booking for the coach. Bristol Academy are top of the League but Heather reckons they are not that good! Please email Mike or phone/text him on 07901 552261.
Have a good week and get practising your finishing girls!

Mud, back to the League and Birmingham

Thanks to all the girls who turned up for the training session on Saturday at Christleton. Hope you have cleaned all the mud off your boots.

Quote of the day: "I can't believe I missed that!" - Heather on fluffing the easiest chance to score in the training game

This Saturday (17 November) we are back at Upton for a league game against Princes Villa United Ladies. Please meet at Upton at 10:30. We hope to have the shirts back with the logos on for the girls that don't have them already.

We have provisionally booked a 53 seater coach for the Birmingham trip on 2nd December, which means that we can welcome parents and other family members as well as the U12 and U14 girls. The cost is £10 per person and we will be leaving Waverton at 10:30am returning at about 7pm. We are starting to collect money and confirm places. We need confirmation and cheques/cash collected by 20 November at the latest. If this can be done this Saturday at Upton, that would be a great help for us.

We are planning to put a feature about the girls into the Birmingham City Ladies FC programme. We would like to include a photo of the team into the programme and would like to ask for parents consent for this to be taken and published. We have a form that we would like the parents/guardians to sign. The photo will be taken Saturday morning at Upton and we shall parents who have not yet signed the form to do so then.

Any questions please contact Mike by email or by tel/text on 07901 552261

Late pressure from Waverton fails to save the game

First game back after the half term break and a disappointing scoreline for our girls at a rain soaked Upton on Saturday 3 November.

The Dynamoes are a strong side and took the lead on 7 minutes, doubling their lead three minutes later as the Waverton girls struggled to get to grips with the game. Heather and Mike made some changes at half time but Vicars Cross doubled their lead before Waverton got hold of the game and put pressure on the Dynamoes goal. The pressure paid off when with just 5 minutes of the game left, a great ball from Lily Worden put Olivia Rhodes through with a great chance to score in front of goal. Olivia made no mistake. Soon after Waverton nearly got a second and continued to press forward, with a succession of Keira Berry corners nearly resulting in a goal. At the other end, Darcy Tuite made a fantastic diving save late on to deny the red shirted Dynamoes another goal and Cara Grime did some excellent clearing up work in defence.

Quote of the day: 'How can I be the striker when I am wearing the number 15 shirt?' - Olivia before kick off.

We are now half way through the first part of the season and we play all of the teams again before Christmas. Waverton have played well generally this season and should be able to challenge for the top spot in the League.

Next Saturday (November 10th) we do not have a league game, but all players are required to report for training at 10:30 am. Provisionally this will be at Christleton Primary School, but please keep an eye on this website for confirmation.

We've had lots of interest in the Birmingham Ladies FC visit on Sunday 2 December and hope to be able to get enough to run a coach, at a cost of £10 per person. Parents are welcome. Please confirm your availability with either Simon or Mike.

Sunday 28 October 2007

New date for visit to Birmingham City Ladies FC

Our trip to watch Birmingham City Ladies has had to be changed as Birmingham have recently been told that they have to play a local cup game on the original date. We will now be going to watch Heather take on Bristol Academy on Sunday 2 December. Heather is already getting nervous! We have invited the U14 girls to join us and if we can get enough interest, we hope to be able to provide a coach from Waverton to Redditch where Birmingham play their home games. Please let Simon or Mike know if you can come.

On the pitch we have seen some great Saturday morning performances from the Waverton girls. A comprehensive defeat of Princes Villa was followed by an excellent 2-2 draw with Malpas with Ellie Riste and Olivia Rhodes getting on the score sheet. Talk us through 'that' goal celebration again Olivia.

A very tight game against Princes Villa United then followed which sadly ended in a 1-0 defeat.

Next up is Vicars Cross on Saturday 3 November at Upton County Offices. Please be there by 10:40 am at the latest.

We are still trying to sort out a midweek training venue and we will keep you up to date with arrangements. The situation is not one we wanted but there is a real shortage of suitable training venues in the Chester area that are available at reasonable times in the evening.
