Girls end of season social and other things (UPDATED)

End of season night out - Friday 4 July

On Friday 4 July all of the players are invited to an end of season social event. We shall meet at Ten Pin Bowling at the Greyhound Park Chester at 6:20. After a game of bowling we shall go to Frankie and Benny's for pizza/pasta etc.

All of the girls have said that they can come and so we have booked numbers and paid a deposit accordingly. Please let Mike know asap if you cannot come or if you need transport from the Waverton/Christleton area.
End of Season Presentations
The presentations will now not take place at the Fete as the club has been unable secure an agreement with the organisers. Instead we shall now present the medals this Friday at the night out.

Curtain closes on fine season (UPDATED)

Umbro Soccer Sixes tournament - Poynton Sunday 22 June

The season which started back last September came to an end at the Poynton tournament, one of the most prestigious events on the junior football calendar. The girls competed very well against much more experienced opposition and more than held their own for most of the time. The group included sides such as Blackpool, Curson Ashton and Macclesfield Town, some of the best girls sides in the North West, and the girls should be proud of their great performances.

Thanks to Chris Rhodes and Simon Mageean for the photographs. Click on them to download a better resolution copy.

  • Funniest moment - Keira asking how old all the opposition girls were just two minutes into the first game

  • Best moment - Lily's goal against Halton JFC
  • Best run - Ellie Riste against Poynton JFC - unstoppable from one end to the other

  • Best save - D'arcy against Macclesfield. Suberb once again between the sticks which brought compliments from the opposition manager.

  • Best free kick - Keira's long range effort following a foul on Ellie Riste that Rachel nearly scored from.

  • Best performance - against Halton JFC. So unlucky not to win. Best dressed - Gabi with socks on top of trackie bottoms
  • Best Premier League footballer impression - Olivia complaining to the ref after being dumped on the floor in the first game.

  • Best defensive pairing - Cara and Ellie M. U12s loss, u14s gain.

Who was that sub?

AFC Waverton u14 3 - AFC Waverton u12 0

Despite the scoreline this was a great performance from the girls against their older and bigger opponents. The u14s dominated for the first five minutes with the u12s wondering whether they would ever get out of their own half. After weathering the storm though, the passing football so much on show this season clicked into place and the u12 started to take more control of the game.

At the back, Cara and Ellie M, ablely assisted by Holly, cleared up most of the threats in front of Rachel in goal, whilst Keira, Ellie R and Lily worked the ball up to Lucy and Olivia up front. Olivia, Keira and Lily were unlucky not to get on the score sheet in the first half.

In the second half however, the older girls showed their strength, taking the lead early in the second half. Two more goals followed but with just five minutes left, the u12s brought on a sub in a last ditch attempt to turn the game around. Looking rather older than an u12 she showed some nice touches including having a shot that nearly put the brave u14 'keeper, who saved it, halfway to Christleton. Looking like she could play at a higher level, she also set up Olivia and Ellie R, who were both unlucky not to score.

The super sub. Don't we know her from somewhere?

The super sub even took a goal kick, which resulted in the charge of light brigade by all other 19 players into the far box in expectation. Route one football at its worst!

Well done to all the u12 and u14 girls for this well fought out friendly. Thanks to David Harker and Chris Rhodes for sharing refereering duties.
