Return home provides great display

AFC Waverton 1 - Wirral Hawks 8

The first home game of 2009 proved to be a excellent one with a great display by Waverton against the top side in the League who had already scored 120 goals this season.

The game started brightly with Waverton dealing with the visitors attacks. Lucie in particular was in fine form between the sticks. Lily had a great chance to put Waverton in the lead but the Hawks got first blood after about 10 minutes. Soon after though the impressive Keira fed a lovely ball through to Elia who spun away from her marker and unleased a great shot into the back of the net. 1-1 and game on.

The stronger Wirral side with the luxury of subs extended their lead to 3-1 by half time, but the home side were more than a match in terms of competitiveness, passing and team work.

The Hawks went further ahead in the second half but again the girls can be really proud of their display against such a good side which included former Liverpool academy players. All players performed well and didn't let their heads go down. Lucie was excellent in the goal, Meg and Ellie defended well, Lily, Keira and the singing Hollie impressive in midfield and Elia up front looked class.

Well done girls!

Next up Greenleas Celtic at home next Saturday ko 9:30.

MOM for Waverton - Keira Berry, for The Hawks - Jess Mort. Ref: Mike Axon.

Hawks fly in on Saturday

The first home game of 2009 will see high flying Wirral Hawks visit Waverton for a 9:30 kick off. The game will take place on the school pitch as the u16s are at home too. All players are asked to meet at 9:00 and any parents who are able to help with setting up the goals and pitch will be welcome.

The u14s will play at 11, so all the Waverton girls will be playing at home on Saturday.

Training as usual at Christleton High School at 6pm on Wednesday.

The coaches for the u12s, u14s and u16s met up this weekend with the club chairman. Amongst the things agreed were:

For next season we will run:

u12s - Y6 and Y7 girls team probably in the Wallasey League
u14s - Y8 and Y9 girls team probably in the Wallasey League
u16s - Y10 and Y11 girls team probably in the Wallasey League

We will have a invitation morning for current Y5 (& possY6) girls from local schools to do a few coaching sessions and watch an u12s or u14s or u16s game. The club has been running after school sessions in schools such as Christleton and Mill View and will invite these girls down to the club. Also all our squads will be there to talk to prospective new players and to help run some coaching for the younger girls. This will take place on a Saturday after Easter and will be followed by some food in the Village Hall.

We will enter some tournaments such as Poynton in June.

Puffed out in Pensby

Ridgewood Rangers 3 - AFC Waverton 0

A rare afternoon kick off for the Waverton girls saw them back up to west Wirral where they were victorious last weekend. The Ridgewood Rangers side were though stronger than Irby Colts and were already well into an organised warm up when the Waverton team bus pulled into Fisher Lane.

Thanks to a great sporting gesture from Steve and the guys at Ridgewood, the home team volunteered to play with only 6 girls so as to provide an equal match with our 6. This was very welcome especially as they had 10 girls down to play.

Hollie called into team HQ on Friday night to warn of her potential absence due to sickness and called again in the morning to confirm her unavailability. Keira and Caitlin were on extended holidays so it was down to six for the second week running.

The Waverton girls lined up with Lucie the Reina in goal, Meg and Ellie the Carragher and Hypia (ok Ellie, Micah Richards!) at the back, Lily and Emma the Gerrard and Alonso in the midfield and Elia in the lone Torres role up front. See you can get away with this kind of thing when the two red devils Heather and Keira are away.

The pitch was big and the early pressure came from the home side. Fortunately the defence and Lucie dealt with the threats. Waverton relied upon breakaways with Elia and Lily both going close. Halfway through the first period a corner came over and was deflected past Lucie who did her best to stretch to keep it out.

Half time and a much needed rest. Elia had aggravated an injury but hobbled on, whilst the positions stayed the same. Good work between Elia, Lily and Emma resulted in a number of good runs at goal and captain Lily hit the post from one of them. Ellie pushed up from the back and made some good deep runs whilst Meg held things together. Lucie kept them out with a number of fine saves but two goals from the Rangers late in the half put the game beyond doubt. The third goal came from a break when Waverton had been pushing up and Lucie was powerless to stop the blue shirts bearing down on her.

Ellie Riste and Elia swapped positions to try to get a goal back and to protect Elia's ankle. With the luxury of subs, the Rangers finished much stronger but Waverton could have easily have nicked a goal back near the end.

Player of the match as voted by Ridgewood - Ellie Riste, and for Ridgewood as voted by Waverton - Molly Brewster.

Once again thanks to Ridgewood coaches and girls for the offer to play 6 v 6. We wish them best of luck for the rest of the season.

The numbers game

Irby Colts 2 - AFC Waverton 3

The second game after the extended Christmas break saw the Waverton team produce an excellent display despite being a player down for all the match. Two goals from Lily who was a constant threat and one from Keira proved to be enough of a cushion to deal with the late challenge from the Colts. This was a good game played in a good fashion.

Meg, Caitlin and Hollie were unavailable. The pitch was wide with long grass which would have sapped the strength from seven pairs of legs, let alone six competing against seven. Yet the visitors were generally on top for all the game displaying some excellent teamwork and organisation to counter the extra player.

The team lined up in 2-2-1 formation with Ellie and Emma at the back, Lily and Keira in midfield and 'la dificul nuna' Elia up front. Waverton had the early chances and then took the lead when a Keira corner from the left was knocked home at close range by Lily.

Chances followed to double the lead including shots from Keira and Elia which went wide. Irby though were always a threat if they could use their number advantage on the break and this is what happended as they broke down the right and with the Waverton defence chasing the home player had a great shot which eluded Lucie's grasp and went into the back of the net.

Just before half time Keira had a great run and shot but it hit the post. Lily Elia and Keira were excellent in their passing and Ellie and Emma took turns to come up and support the attack. This was good stuff.

At half time there were concerns about tiredness, but the girls were reminded to make the ball work, make the most of the breaks and that Irby didn't have any subs so they too would tire. The second goal came again from a Keira corner which Lily hit home. Keira added to the lead with a great shot but Irby came back into it and the striker hit a fantastic shot which Lucie was powerless to stop although she did her best, with the ball flying off her hands and face into the net.

At the other end Waverton had more chances but the final touch was just no right. In the goal, Kristin Michael was very brave diving at the feet of our attackers and deserved her MOM award.

All in all a great display which makes up for last week's disappointment at Manor.

MOM as voted by Irby Colts - Keira Berry.

Poynton Tournament - Sunday June 28

The organiser of the Poynton tournament has sent us an invitation to play in one of the biggest tournaments in the country. We took an u12s side there last year and had a great day. There are some really good sides and last year we played against Blackpool FC girls team for example. Ellie, Lily, and Keira all played last year.

It will take place at Poynton High School which is near Macclesfield. The tournament will be all day and we will play at least 6 short matches in group stages. It will be a real opportunity to compete against some of the best sides in the North West. More details below.

Mike needs to know soon if there is sufficient support from players and parents to play (we have to pay an entry fee in March) and would be grateful if you could let him or Heather know.

Training is this Wed and there is a game on Saturday away at Irby Colts. More details on this website later in the week.

Stuck in the mud

Manor Bullets 8 - AFC Waverton 1

After a seven week break, the team returned to competitive football on a muddy pitch in Oxton. The pitch was passed fit yesterday but had a big muddy patch in the middle. A cold wind blew across the pitch causing Hollie to point out that she couldn't feel her toes. Everyone had a good look at Lucie's clean knees, we wouldn't see them again until Wednesday.

We had a full turnout but it was only achieved by some sweet talking from Keira's mum who had accidently driven down the Wallasey tunnel entrance by mistake.

The game started brightly and after a couple of home attacks good work by the Waverton girls led to Elia hitting the ball home from close range. The Manor side though were not going to give up and plyed some good football reflecting their league position. A couple of the goals in the first half left Lucy with no chance. Towards the end of the half fantastic passing from the midfield trio of Keira, Elia and Lily led to Caitlin being put through on a one on one. Caitlin rounded the keeper but her shot then hit the post and then another shot was dragged wide. Lily was playing well attacking down the flanks.

Keira took a break at the start of the second half after not feeling well. Holly did well in midfield when she came on for Elia and Ellie did some fantastic tackling as the game wore on.

Lucie will have needed a long bath after the game, her knees hidden under inches of mud.

The home side definitely deserved their win, some of the finishing was very good. With an improvement in the weather expected, the Waverton players should now be able to get back into a match frame of mind and should start to pick up where they left off in December with some wins.

Team: Lucie, Emma, Ellie , Lily, Elia, Keira (capt), Caitlin

Subs : Meg for Ellie, Hollie for Elia, then Ellie for Keira, Keira for Emma, Elia for Lily, Lily for Hollie and Emma for Caitlin.

Player of the match for Waverton - Caitlin as chosen by Manor, for Manor Billie Gifford as chosen by Waverton. Referee John Williams. Attendance - 10 parents, Keira's brother and a dog.

Arrangements for game v Manor Bullets/Next season

UPDATE - GAME ON- UPDATE - YES IT IS UNBELIEVABLE BUT IT IS ON!

We play Manor Bullets away at Oxton Park on Saturday morning. All players are asked to meet at Oxton Park at 9:00 ready for a 9:30 kick off.

As usual please keep an eye on the website on Friday. It is a Wirral council pitch and we should know on Friday afternoon if it is likely to be off. If there is a problem it will be because of the pitch being waterlogged as a result of this week's snow melting.

Team: Lucie, Hollie, Keira, Ellie R, Elia, Lily, Meg and Emma.

Lucie and Hollie have asked for lifts. Anybody else needing a lift please let Mike know on 07901552261.

Oxton Park is not in Oxton at all, but in Liscard. The field is on Poulton Road opposite the Rose and Crown pub. The field is small and there is a play area at the back where younger children or substitutes can play on the equipment.

Take M53 to end but don't follow the tunnel signs, instead take ramp left on to A5088 signposted 'All Docks'. Follow this road to a roundabout. Turn left onto Poulton Bridge Road and then a little further turn right onto Poulton Road. The road goes over the top of the Wallasey Tunnel road and then a little further on just past the junction with Oxton Road, you'll see the Rose and Crown on your right. Park on the road and the field is opposite the pub. If you have a sat navvy thing the postcode of the pub is CH44 4DE.Paste CH44 4De into the following link, click 'birds eye view' and you will have a clear unobstructed view of the pitch:http://maps.live.com/

See you there!

We are also starting to give some thought to next season and what teams and age groups we might run. We have made tremendous progress with the girls set up at Waverton and wish to develop even more stronger squads for next season. Heather, Mike, David Harker (u16s) and Simon Mageean (u14s) will be getting together in the next couple of weeks. Any parents who have any particular views or wish to join the discussion please let Mike know on 07901552261.

Results and tables from Saturday

Due to the wet weather only two games were played on Saturday, so we don't feel too bad. Leaders Wirral Hawks who we play at the end of the months beat Heygarth and next Saturday's opposition Manor Bullets beat Ridgewood Rangers (our opponents the week after next) 3-1.
