Waverton win on the Wirral

Heygarth United 1 - AFC Waverton 3

An excellent performance by the girls on Thursday night resulted in victory in this friendly against Wirral side Heygarth United. Heygarth took the lead in the first half with a brilliant long range shot which crashed in off the underside of the bar. Waverton fought back and from a Keira Berry long throw in Ellie Riste tapped the ball home, a repeat of the goal against Princes Villa a couple of weeks ago.

In the second half Waverton were the stronger side and created a number of chances. Lily Worden went close twice and Ellie Riste just missed out converting a cross by inches. Soon after though Waverton were in front when guest player Caitlin Brooks thumped the ball past the 'keeper following good play from the midfield trio. A little later Caitlin scored again to give the visitors a comfortable margin which they kept until the final whistle.

Updated - arrangements for match this Thursday (15th)

Well done to all the girls who played against Princes Villa Utd on Saturday. Special mention must go to Lucy who played in goal for most of the game (and nearly scored when she came out) and to Ellie Riste who played despite being unwell.

This Thursday we have a friendly match against a team from Eastham on the Wirral, Heygarth United. The match will be played in Eastham and will kick off at 6pm. All players are asked to meet there at 5:45. The game will be on grass, please bring full Waverton kit, shin pads and boots.

UPDATED MONDAY 12 MAY-

The game will now be played at the Plymyard ground at Bridle Road Eastham. Take the M53 to junction 5. Take the A41 northwards towards Eastham and Bromborough. Keep on A41 for 0.8 mile towards the shops at Eastham. Just after the set of lights go straight on past the
shops on left and then turn left into Bridle Road. Keep on Bridle Road for o.4 mile crossing over a couple of roads. The field is on the left hand side just after the junction with Elgar Road.

If any players require transport from Waverton/Christleton, please let me know on 07901552261.

Because of the match on Thursday there will be no training on Wednesday 14 May.

The League has decided to award the points to us for the postponed game against Malpas, meaning that Saturday's game against Princes Villa United was the final League game of the season. We finished third. Well done to all of the girls who have worn the yellow shirt since last September.

Heather and I will post further information about arangements for the remainder of the season on the website this week.

Happy Birthday to Ellie Riste for Monday and good luck to all the Y6 girls doing their SATS this week.

Late goals take the shine off spirited fightback

Princes Villa United 4 - AFC Waverton 2

Saturday's game once again showed our weakness in conceding late goals, although the positives were some great passing football, a determined fightback and the creation of numerous chances.

The two, it has to be said, scrappy goals at the end of the game came after a very spirited fightback from the Waverton girls to get back on equal terms from a 2-0 score line. Drawing back to 2-2 was totally justified on the balance of play, but instead of snatching all the points, which we were perfectly capable of doing, we let in two goals. The penultimate one was a mix up in the defence, and the last one was very unlucky with the referee judging that the ball had crossed the line as it rolled across the goal.

We have done a computer reconstruction of this 'goal' and as you can see below, the ball did not cross the line.

Our first goal came from a long throw from Keira Berry on the right. The ball wasn't cleared properly and Ellie Mageean, arriving late into the box, poked the ball home. That signalled a great fightback from the girls and it was no surprise when they drew level. Olivia Rhodes got into the box on the right hand side and was unlucky not to score herself before the ball came across to Ellie Riste who smacked it home from close range.

For the first time this season, Darcy Tuite had a period as an outfield player in the second half, but hurt her ankle in a very brave tackle and had to go off.

Same opponents again next week at Upton (meet at 10:30) for and a chance to make amends. This may possibly be our final league game of the season, as we are waiting on the league to decide whether to award us the points for the game that Malpas were unable to fulfill last week.

Well done to Vicars Cross Dynamoes who became League Champions yesterday. The Vicars Cross u12s side is disbanding now and we wish the girls well in their new clubs.

Training will take place at Christleton Primary School this Wednesday at 5:30.

See you all there!

Training this Wednesday (April 30)

Training will take place this Wednesday evening at Christleton Primary School. Please meet there at 5:30pm.

On Saturday (May3) we play top of the league side Princes Villa United. It is very important that we fulfill this fixture as it was us who asked for it to be rearranged at Easter. Can any girls who cannot make it please let Mike know asap. So far nobody has said that they are unavailable, so we are assuming we'll have a full strength team out. Please meet at Upton at 10:30.

The girls u12 and u14 coaches are meeting with some of the other clubs and representatives of the Cheshire FA next Wednesday (May 7) to discuss arrangements for next season. For example we need to have an understanding of how many girls teams will be available in the Chester area to play league matches from September. If you have any issues that you would like us to raise or that we should be aware of, please let Mike, Heather or Simon know before May 7.

Malpas game cancelled (April 26)

UPDATE*****
____________________SATURDAY'S GAME HAS BEEN CALLED OFF TONIGHT AS MALPAS CANNOT GET A TEAM TOGETHER DUE TO A GUIDE CAMP THIS WEEKEND. THEY HAVE APOLOGISED DEEPLY FOR THIS.

WE HAVE DECIDED NOT TO TRAIN THIS SATURDAY SO WE'LL SEE YOU ALL NEXT WEDNESDAY AT CHRISTLETON PRIMARY SCHOOL AT 5:30.
____________________
After what seems like an age, we return to League action this Saturday when we play Malpas at Upton. All players are asked to meet there at 10:30. We are mid table and need a win to keep up a challenge for the top spots. Last time against Malpas, we conceded a late late goal to end up with a 2-2 draw, so we must keep concentrating this time.

Over the last month we have practised corners, passing and moving, using the wings, free kicks, crossing, shooting, putting on a bib the right way, throw ins and and how to clear a ball off the goaline by the use of a diving header (the Riise technique). So we'll look forward to seeing it all come together on Saturday.

We have only three League matches left this season. The next one after this Saturday will be the rearranged Princes Villa game which will now take place on the following Saturday May 3rd. This game was originally fixed for the last Saturday of the Easter holidays but the League kindly agreed to our request to postpone given that a number of girls were on holiday. We will not be able to postpone this game again. Please can parents let Mike or Heather know asap if any player is unable to make the May 3rd fixture.

Training this Wednesday (April23)

Training will take place this Wednesday at 5:30pm at Christleton Primary School.

On Sunday, Lucy, Ellie M, Ellie R, Cara and Lily went to watch Heather's Birmingham City take on Everton Ladies. The match was played at Marine's ground in Liverpool and finished 2-2.
Everton are a good side featuring some England internationals, but Birmingham matched them very well and showed great spirit despite twice going a goal behind. Everton took the lead through a penalty but the visitors soon equalised when the Toffees defence couldn't clear the ball away and it was smashed home. In the second half Everton scored with a great header from a free kick, but Birmingham got back into the game when a long wind assisted kick from Sue Wood in goal sailed over everybody including Everton's England 'keeper Rachel Brown and Becky Hall tapped the ball into an empty net. Heather played all of the 90 minutes in the Birmingham midfield despite having a heavy cold.
Afterwards Heather took the Waverton girls into the dressing room and introduced them to the team. The girls also got autographs of the Birmingham and Everton players and also met Rachel Unitt, England's left back.

We are glad to hear that Rachel is getting better and we all hope to see her back with us soon.
