What a great season!

It finally ended on July 4th after beginning in early September, but what a great season it was.
Our debut in the Wallasey Junior League was definitely a step up from playing in the Chester Junior League. There were some really good teams in the League and we had some really hard games. Nevertheless we held our own despite sometimes having no substitutes and sometimes less players than the opposition.
Arrangements for the season started so tragically in August when Rachel's mum was killed in a car crash, a tremendous shock to us all. Mike had that morning received a text from her arranging to meet up to collect the registration forms. We held a minutes silence in our first game in the League.
The bad weather delayed the start of the season but when we got going we had some excellent games in the Autumn. The comeback from 3-0 down to Manor Bullets to 3-3 was one of the highlights of the season and marked an impressive debut for Elia who started the comeback with a well taken goal.
We thrashed Wirral Rangers in the cup in October. November produced some good games. Just before Christmas we had a fantastic game against Heygarth at Eastham where we were comprehensive winners. The bad weather intervened in January and it was February before we got going again and produced some excellent wins including beating Irby Colts away with only 6 players against their 7.

In March we played fantastically against Wallasey Wanderers at Oxton Park despite losing against the top side in the League and beat Greenleas at home. In April we played some evening games and were superb including beating Ellesmere Port with two Lily goals and Ridgewood Rangers at Waverton. We finished off our home games with a 5-1 thrashing of Delta Rangers with goals from Lily, Emma, Hollie, Emma and Kiera.

We beat Delta Colts in the League at Oxton with Caitlin on superb form.

We progressed well in the Presidents Cup beating, Delta Colts in the semi final in Central Park in Wallasey, before that memorable final against Irby Colts.

That night in Birkenhead in June was fantastic. The girls took time to settle but once Kiera had put us into the lead with a goal straight from the corner, we were always in control. Ellie Riste rang down the left to add a second and Meg popped up to knock in the third. Kiera collected the trophy, a really proud moment for all at AFC Waverton.
The season ended with an excellent performance in the rain at the Vicars Cross tournament where we made it through to the final of the Shield beating Winsford in the quarters and Buckley Town in the semi through a nerve wracking penalty shootout. In the final we could have won, but were undone by a quality individual goal with just two minutes left.

A great season indeed and all the girls can be proud of their achievements individually and as a team.
Lucie went in goal full time in November and really made a difference straight away. She is so brave and kept us in it so often.
Kiera has been inspirational all season and a true leader on and off the field leading the girls through warm up drills. Entirely appropriate that she was captain for the Presidents Cup Final.
Meg and Emma came to us from Vicars Cross and fitted in really well. Meg was absolutely solid at the back and Emma's passion and determination was a joy to behold.

Hollie improved so much during the year and grabbed a man of the match in April and a couple of goals. Well done Hollie!

Lily improved very well and grew in strength. Her inch perfect vision and passing was a real benefit to the team all season and her know how of where to be helped her to be one of the leading goalscorers for the season.
Caitlin now lives in Wiltshire and couldn't make every game but when she could play she was excellent and scored some cracking goals as well as playing superbly in goal in the tournament to help win the penalty shoot out.
Ellie is so strong and never ever stops running. She played many games in defence but was often seen running forward with the ball and popping up to score. Her crunching tackles were in evidence all season.

Finally to Elia who only joined us in September. What a star she has been and how she has improved. She is tricky, reads the game well and has grown in such strength that she will hold her own despite being the youngest in the team. She will shine in the u12s next season.

Thanks to all the parents and grandparents for their support and to David Harker, Simon Mageean, Matt Frost and Graham Frost for all their help.
Sadly the team is now being split up. Ellie, Lily, Emma, Caitlin and Kiera are moving up to the u14s with Lucie and Elia staying with the u12s. Hollie plans to retire and Meg has decided to hang up her boots.

Thank you girls for being a joy to coach. Have a great summer.

We're proud of you

Vicars Cross Tournament

A great individual goal from Manor Bullets was the separation between winning the Shield and losing. We played so well in many of our games en route to the final and came very close to winning before the knock out blow in the final few minutes.
Well done to all the girls who did so well today. There were some very good teams in the u12s and we did AFC Waverton proud. A good end to a great season.

The results were:

Group Stage:

v Chester City girls - drew 1-1 (Keira)
v Heygarth drew 0-0
v Vicars Cross Dynamoes won 1-0 (Lily)
v Halton lost 1-0
v Great Sutton Ladies lost 2-0
v Llewod Llanrug lost 2-0
v Bury drew 0-0

Quarter Final

v Winsford Girls won 2-1 (Kiera, Caitlin)

Semi Final

v Buckley Town Girls drew 0-0 won on penalties (Keira, Lily, Emma scoring)

Final

v Manor Bullets lost 1-0

Well done - Caitlin, Kiera, Hollie, Emma, Ellie, Lily, Elia and our special guest Liz.

Thanks to all players who played in positions that they didn't really want to, and especially to those who volunteered to go in goal and did brilliantly - Ellie, Liz, Hollie, Kiera and Caitlin.

Thanks all the parents, to Vicars Cross Dynamoes for the excellent organisation and to David Harker for coming down to support and bringing some more water supplies.

Quotes of the day:

"Can I be captain against Vicars Cross Dynamoes, please, please, please?"- Emma on her former club

The final training session of 2008/09 will take place at Waverton on WEDNESDAY 1 JULY at 5:30 - 6:30. Please be there on time. The training will focus on preparing for the Vicars Cross Girls Festival of Football on Saturday 4 July.

The under 12 tournament is now full and the draw has been made. We wait to see who we have to play but there are some good sides in the u12 group including Wigan. The games will kick off
at 9:30 and all girls will have to meet there at 9.

The confirmed squad is: Kiera, Lily, Elia, Emma, Hollie, Caitlin, and Ellie.

The festival will take place at the Rugby club at Hare Lane. From Littleton go across the A51 and past the Rugby club entrance, over the by pass and into the Rugby training field on the left. Car parking and the matches will all be in this field.

Any parents or friends who wish to take photos or video can do so but will have to complete a request form. Mike has copies which will have to be handed in to the registration tent.

We need to sort out the registrations for all those girls who want to play for us next season. Details on the thread below, but we need to collect:

Waverton registration form 2009/10 (see front page of main website) and cheque for £75

Both of the above should be handed to Mike or Heather by the date of the tournament at the absolute latest.

Arrangements for next season and Vicars Cross tournament

Next Season

We need to complete the registration arrangements for next season asap, definitely by the end of June.

We have entered three teams into the Wallasey League, at u16, u14 and u12 level.

Kiera, Ellie, Lily, Emma, Meg and Caitlin will team up with Cara, Olivia, Ellie M, Nicola, Laura and Amy to form a very strong under 14 side. You all have played for a season with Olivia, Cara and Ellie so you know them well.

Elia and Lucie will stay with the under 12s along with Hollie if she decides to stay for another season. These girls will be joined by a group of new girls who have been recruited from Christleton and Waverton Primary Schools. Lizzie who trained with us in the winter may also join the under 12s.

Mike and Heather will move up to manage the under 14s with Paul Bowman taking over the under 12s. Paul has been managing junior football at Waverton for a while and his
daughter Isobel will also join the u12s.

All of the Wallasey League games will take place on Saturday mornings (and some midweek games in the Autumn and Spring), so there will be no change from what you have all been used to.

David Harker, who many of you will know, will act as co-ordinator for the girls football at the club. Robbie Mills will continue coaching the u16s.

Heather and Mike will be sad to lose Elia, Hollie and Lucie, but we'll see you again in the 2010/11 season when the current u12 team will all be the under 14 side. Get it? We'll still be around of course to offer help and support.

We need to get the registrations sorted. All girls must complete the two processes:

1 Complete an AFC Waverton registration form. This is downloadable and printable from the resources page of this AFC Waverton website. Go the home page and resources is on the menu on the left. The form is the first one on the Resources page. This is the subscription for the 2009/10 season for the club. You will need to print off the form and return to Mike along with a cheque for £75 for the years sub by 30 June. This covers things like FA registration of each player, insurance, training equipment and kit, referee costs etc.

2 Complete a registration form for the Wallasey League. Mike has these and the good news is that this is paid by the club and Mike will complete most of the form for you as last season. You will just need to tell us if contact details, school, medical issues, etc have changed from last season. Also because the girls change so quickly, the League insist on two new passport photos. Please get these done asap.

Mike will be in touch with you to agree how the information will be collected from you, but we need to do all this by 30 June. After that point, we will start recruiting externally for the teams. So we have given our existing girls until the end of the month to get signed up and we have guaranteed them a place in the squad if they complete all of the paperwork by then.

The above applies to Lucie, Holly and Elia too, Mike will sort out your stuff for you.

Any problems, please give Mike a call/text on 07901 552261.

Vicars Cross Tournament - Girls Festival of Football - Saturday July 4

We have entered the team into the Vicars Cross tournament given the encouraging responses on availability.

The squad is:

Kiera, Lily, Ellie, Emma, Elia, Hollie, Caitlin.  We have no subs so get to bed early the night before girls!

We are awaiting details from Vicars Cross, but we understand that they are really looking forward to us being there and the U12 age group is now full. It should be a great day and an excellent way to finish the season.

You will need to reserve all day. The tournament will be held at Chester Rugby Club at Hare Lane. There will be no charge to the girls, the £30 entry fee is being paid by the club.

As soon as we more details, we'll put them here.

Shooting practice needed!

End of season night out

Hope all the girls had a great time out last night at Laser Quest and Pizza Hut at Cheshire Oaks. A good end to a great season.

Mike's red team beat Heather's green team in the first game and then it went the other way in the second game. There was some hand to hand combat going on in there too, but we won't mention any names!

We'll probably be going back there in the new season as everyone enjoyed it.
